King Lear (Stratford-upon-Avon. 1962)

‘When I did [King Lear ] in the theatre, in the theatre it seemed to me that the play demanded great freedom, and a minimum of elements. Yet an empty stage, with nothing, would not give the support to make you feel that this is a real story about real people. So, by trial and error, I made a set where there was sort of a grey-white surround, and within it elements made out of rusty iron that we left for weeks to go rusty in the rain . . . All the costumes were made out of leather . . . The leather and iron gave something real . . . Now, transfer that to the cinema.’
